I can still ask them what their strengths and weaknesses are...that accomplishes the same thing more or less, doesn't it?
no subject
What if they don't tell you the truth? I'm not saying they won't, but what if?
FROM: shepard.lydia@cdc.org
Or what if the file is wrong or only tells you half the story?
FROM: shepard.lydia@cdc.org
The important part is having all the information you can to make informed decisions. A leader shouldn't shy away from intel, Ikari.

I know...you're right. It just feels so invasive.
no subject
It is. But you're doing it to protect your people.
FROM: shepard.lydia@cdc.org
That's how this works.
[People come first. Who cares what that makes you?]

FROM: ikari.shinji@cdc.org
And I should do whatever it takes to protect them, right?
no subject
In pursuit of your mission goals, yes.
no subject
To what extent is too far?
no subject
If we were where I come from, I'd tell you that you have to make that decision on your own. Your people are together for a reason and that reason is fulfilling missions given to you. You can't throw those away. But sometimes completing an assignment isn't worth the price point.
FROM: shepard.lydia@cdc.org
But it's different here. You should ask Armada about acceptable losses.
no subject
I don't want to be responsible for someone's death. I don't want that on my hands.
no subject
Do you think anyone wants that?
no subject
Monsters do.
[Not the literal ones, of course, or your bump in the night variety, but the ones who disguise themselves as people, who were born human but have no shred of humanity left inside them to care.]
no subject
Then don't be one of those.
no subject
It's not that simple.
no subject
You're not a monster as long as you stay angry when people die.
no subject
Anger never solves anything, even if it's unavoidable.
[Shinji's learned that the hard way.]
no subject
Then stay upset. Whatever you want to call it but as long as you're feeling something, that keeps you accountable.
FROM: shepard.lydia@cdc.org
Monsters don't think they're accountable for anything.
no subject
...What was the scariest monster you've ever met?
no subject
A man who thinks he can control bigger ones.
no subject
Was he able to?
no subject
FROM: shepard.lydia@cdc.org
No.
no subject
...I know a monster like that too. Only he doesn't just think it, he can.
no subject
What's your point?
no subject
How do you stop a monster like that? How do you stop from being controlled by a monster like that?
no subject
Is this "monster" here?
no subject
No.
